In the last days of summer 2023, Zalando opened the new store in Bielefeld, one of the three new stores in Germany that year, along with the one in Frankfurt am Main and one in Karlsruhe. In the first phase of designing the store in Bielefeld, I contributed to a new look for the façade and, of course, the outdoor advertising elements.

A solution was needed that would be eye-catching without obscuring the interior. At the same time, it should highlight the product range so that people would know what to expect.

I proposed a number of different approaches in order to find out which material solutions would best suit the Zalando style and at the same time fit in with the local architecture.

To enliven the façade and create a suitable contour for the logo, I used anodized aluminium panels with an additional brushed texture.
This allowed us to highlight our location without hiding the interior from the curious gaze of customers. The logo now stands out well against the background of the façade and, when backlit, looks great after dark.

I had to reduce the size of the logo due to the city’s approval process for the façade signage. The last step was the design of the storefront, for which I used a design that had already been tested for the Cologne store. The picture shows the final facade in Bielefeld.
